Classic Car Addict is proud to present this beautiful 1998 Chevrolet Corvette with 24,508 miles for sale in our Mesa, AZ showroom. More than 40 years after the 1953 Corvette debuted, Chevrolet introduced the fifth-generation Corvette for 1997. The C5 almost didn't happen. Originally scheduled for release in 1993, the Corvette was killed for a short time before performance zealots within General Motors resuscitated the project and made the new car a reality.
Handsome analog dials have replaced the previous digital displays, but the most striking change inside is comfort. Lower door sills and narrower side rails make getting in and out far easier and there's more room for the driver and passenger. There's also a real trunk, something that's been absent from Corvettes for a long time. The other major element of improvement is the elimination of the rattles and stress squeaks that have haunted Vettes for so long. Finished in Ebony black leather, there are no rips or tears present in the interior. She still smells new!
Chevrolet did not want to use metal in the construction of this vehicle because the body panels are still made of a non-metal material. A sheet molded composite surrounds an ultra-stiff structure with a full-length perimeter frame and tubular steel side rails. She is finished in our favorite color, Torch Red. Doing a full walkaround, there are no dents and a few small rock chips (see YOUTUBE video). Again, she is the perfect example of a well-loved, garage-kept Corvette.
The 1998 Corvette comes with a 5.7-liter V8 engine dubbed the LS1. The LS1 produces 345 horsepower at 5,600 rpm, while torque measures 350 foot-pounds at 4,400 rpm. The car comes with a standard four-speed automatic transmission that helps the Corvette hit 60 mph in five seconds. Traction control is standard on the vehicle, this feature helps the vehicle maintain stability on slippery surfaces. A four-wheel disc antilock braking system accompanies the Corvette and keeps stopping distances short with larger rotors than previous Corvettes. The front tires are 17 inches in diameter, and the rears are 18 inches across, which contributes to an excellent .93g of road grip. The rubber stays planted well thanks to the independent four-wheel suspension.
the basic sports car mission–carving up switchbacks or attacking an autocross course–the new Vette has the reflexes of an Olympic gymnast. It's a superb blend of muscle and finesse, with a much higher tolerance for mistakes of the enthusiastic variety, complemented by brakes that are nothing short of race worthy.
